If you are looking for a border collie memorial piece, the first useful question is not which product but which format suits the way you remember your dog. A working collie who lived for the flock and a retired collie who lived for the sofa ask for different kinds of likeness.
Start with the photograph, not the product
Every piece we make begins with your photographs. For a border collie, the photographs that carry the most information are rarely the most flattering. A head-on shot in flat light will tell us more about the set of the ears and the shape of the muzzle than a dramatic sunset silhouette. If you have a photograph of your collie in profile, mid-stride, or lying with the head resting on the paws, keep it. Those poses describe character as much as conformation.
Collies are often photographed in motion, which is beautiful but difficult. If the only good photograph you have is a blur of black and white crossing a field, that is still usable, but the maker will need to interpret. Be prepared for the white-model stage to look less like your dog than you hope. That is normal. The approval step exists precisely so that the interpretation can be corrected before the final piece is finished.
Which format suits a border collie
We make several kinds of memorial piece, and they are not interchangeable. The honest summary is that some formats flatter a collie’s markings and some do not.
- Needle-felted wool portrait — a hand-shaped likeness in merino wool, set in a solid wood frame with a wooden base. Wool takes colour in soft layers, which suits the blurred edges of a collie’s white chest and the ticking on the legs. It is not a print and it is not a photograph. It reads as a made object, with the slight irregularity that implies.
- Silver memorial pendant — an engraved silver pendant, worn or kept. The engraving is line work, so it depends on a clear outline. A collie’s head in profile engraves well. A full-body action shot engraves poorly. This pendant is not a vessel and cannot hold fur, hair or a small lock inside.
- Wool felt pet pendant — a small needle-felted likeness, hand-made, not a vessel. It is a keepsake to carry rather than a display piece.
If you are commissioning for a horse person, the same logic applies. A portrait of a horse’s head in profile is a different proposition from a portrait of a horse mid-jump. The clearer the silhouette, the better the result. For a border collie, the silhouette is usually the ears and the sweep of the tail.
What a border collie memorial piece cannot do
None of the pieces described here is an urn or a vessel for storing ashes. If your intention is to keep ashes inside the piece, these are not the right objects, and we would rather say so plainly than let you commission something that cannot do the job. The silver pendant cannot hold fur or hair inside it either. If you want to keep a lock of fur, a separate small box or locket is the honest answer.
What these pieces can do is hold a likeness. That is a different thing, and for many people it is the thing they actually wanted.
Black and white is not a limitation
People often worry that a black and white dog will be difficult. In wool, the reverse is often true. The contrast gives the maker something to work with, and the white blaze, the white collar, and the white socks become the structure of the piece. In silver engraving, the black areas become polished metal and the white areas become engraved texture. The result is a piece that reads clearly at a distance.
The difficulty is in the eyes. A collie’s expression is intense and specific. If the eyes are wrong, the whole piece is wrong, and no amount of correct marking will fix it. This is why the approval stage matters more than any other part of the process.
How the process actually runs
Every piece is made to order from your photographs. Turnaround is six to fourteen weeks, depending on the piece. The studio is small and the work is done by hand, so the timeline is real rather than a buffer.
Before the final piece is finished, you will see a white-model or work-in-progress approval. Nothing proceeds without your yes. For a border collie, this is the moment to look hard at the ears, the set of the eyes, and the shape of the muzzle. If something is wrong, say so then. It is far easier to correct a white model than a finished piece.
We do not promise that a piece will look identical to a photograph. A photograph is flat and a made object is not. The aim is a likeness that someone who knew your dog would recognise, not a replica.
If you are buying for someone else
A memorial piece is a difficult gift to choose for another person, because it depends on their own photographs and their own memory. If you are buying for a horse person or a collie owner, the most useful thing you can do is not choose the piece but gather the photographs. Ask which photograph they would keep if they could keep only one. That answer will tell you more than any catalogue.
If you are unsure, a smaller piece is often the kinder choice. A silver memorial pendant can be worn or put away. A wool felt pet pendant is small enough to live in a pocket. A framed pet portrait is a display piece and asks for a wall. None of these is more correct than the others. They just suit different rooms and different people.
The question behind the question
Most people who write to us about a border collie memorial piece are not really asking about wool or silver. They are asking whether a made object can carry what they remember. The honest answer is that it can carry a likeness, and that a likeness is sometimes enough. It will not bring the dog back, and it will not do the work of grief for you. But a well-made piece can sit on a shelf or in a pocket and be looked at, and that is a small, real thing.
If that is what you want, the process is straightforward. Choose the photographs, choose the format, and wait for the white model. If it is not right, say so. We would rather start again than send you something that is not your dog.
